Daytime League RESULTS

17 April 2023

The Daytime League is one of the more competitive internal competitions ran by Greenacres, and this season proved no different.

9 teams played against eachother in a single round robin format throughout the season, with the top 4 positions in the league at the end of the round robin facing off in a finals day at the end of the 2022-23 season.

Semi- Finals

Reform 1, skipped by Ian Gillespie, would face off against David Whyte's Gourock team in the first of the semi finals. It was very nip and tuck game in the opening half, where both teams would exchange two lots of singles with hammer with the score 2-2 after 4 ends of play. But a big steal of 3 in the 5th end for Gourock would prove pivotal in the outcome of the game, and a further steal of 1 in the 6th end extending their lead further to 6-2. It would prove too big a mountain for Reform 1 to climb and the score would finish 6-3 in favour of Gourock who would advance to the final.

The second semi final was a slightly more straightforward affair for the Reform 2 team, skipped by John Summers, who would set the pace early on with 4 unanswered points in the opening 3 ends against Colin MacDougall's Between the Sheets side. A score of 2 in the 4th end brought B.T.S. back into the game, but were quickly countered with a score of 3 for Reform in the 5th end that would extend their lead further. Reform would remain in control for the remainder of the game and run out comfortable 10-4 winners, setting up a showdown against Gourock in the final that afternoon.

Final

Reform 2 could not have hoped for a better start to the final, scoring an impressive 4 shots in the opening end of play. David Whyte and his Gourock outfit would not be deterred however, answering back with 3 shots over the next couple of ends to narrow the deficit. With Reform forced to a single point in the 4th end, and the score 5-3 at the halfway point, Gourock had it all to do. With the teams exchanging singles in the next two ends, Gourock would then score a huge 3 points in the 7th end, taking them into the lead for the first time in the game with the score 6-7 with one end of play remaining. With both teams giving it their all in the 8th end, John Summers and his Reform team would keep their composure and execute their shots well to score the all important 2 points that would secure the 8-7 victory, and with it the Greenacres Daytime League trophy.

Congratulations go to the Reform 2 team of John Summers, Margaret Sharp, Ross Barr, Anne Smillie, and John Sharp on winning the league.

Elsewhere, Reform 1 and Between the Sheets would face off in the 3v4 match where Ian Gillespie and his Reform team would go on to secure the win. A big score of 5 shots in the 4th end would give them a comfortable 6 shot advantage going in to the second half of the game. The B.T.S. team would not go down easily however, reducing the deficit to just one shot going in to the final 8th end. Reform would remain composed and in control, scoring a 3 to put the result beyond all doubt, the the score finishing 11-7 in their favour.

Greenacres would also like to extend their congratulations and thanks to all teams that competed in the Daytime League throughout the season. The continued support to the competition by the teams is always greatly appreciated, and we hope to see them all back next season to compete again.
