Our club was formed at 7:30pm on 3 December 1841 at The Black Bull Hotel in the small Ayrshire village of Dalmellington, originally as the Dalmellington Doon Curling Club. We soon amalgamated with the existing Craigengillan Curling Club, and have continued unbroken ever since. We have a long tradition of producing curlers and enjoying the warm social side of the sport.
We are custodians of some truly historic trophies:
Colonel’s Medal: Donated in 1849 by the Hon. Colonel Cathcart of Craigengillan, this solid 18‑carat gold medal has been played for since 1856. It features a 54‑inch gold chain – long enough to circle the entire winning rink – with every link bearing the Edinburgh hallmark. Originally contested by all parishes bordering Dalmellington, it remains open to anyone living within the parish, whether they are a club member or not.
Lady McAdam Trophy: Presented in 1925 by the McAdam family of Craigengillan, this was first played as a knockout competition, later revised to a league format with semi‑finals and a final from 1995 onwards.
Claret Jug: Gifted in 1895 by the McAdams of Craigengillan for league competition.
A.B. Gavin Jug: A remarkable piece with a colourful history – commissioned around 1897 by the Prince of Wales for the Clyde Yachting Club, won personally by the Prince, and later acquired by the club. It was presented to A.F. McAdam in recognition of his service, then placed on permanent loan to us at our 150th anniversary dinner in 1899.
Craigengillan Cup: Donated in 1899 by the Laird of Craigengillan.
The McAdam family were tremendous supporters of our club: in 1849, Lady McAdam gifted us the land and rights to build and maintain our outdoor curling pond, while Colonel Cathcart added the medal for competition.
We still hold access to that same historic outdoor rink on the Craigengillan Estate – the very last outdoor curling rink remaining in Ayrshire – which gives our club its name. Sadly, changing weather patterns mean opportunities to play outdoors are increasingly rare, but we keep the hope alive, and are working to restore the pond so it can be enjoyed by future generations.
We a small friendly club who enjoy both the competitive and social aspects of curling. We would welcome any new curlers into the curling fold.
We have a few friendly matches throughout the season and have an annual curling/social weekend away at the North West Castle in Stranraer.
